  • Feathers in the Stone

Education has been my mortgage-payer since 1998. Surrounded by the eternal chatter of the developing mind, ensconced in a system which elevates the Blame Game into public policy; within an environment in which Theory Y is the way to fly; watch my blogs! I promise to always be honest. To attack those who could change if they wanted to. To be cruel to those who use the system to fulfil their narcissism. To give lots of love. And, I hope, with humour.

  • The Blond Bumshells!

What is the reason for Trump and Johnson? Why did any concatenation of karmic forces combine in such a devilish way to create two such patently dangerous menaces to society, to peace, to the environment, to sanity? Ok, I confess, Boris Johnson is a minor devilette compared to the satanic monster of the Trump. Our perfectly jolly British version with his high camp pomposity and disregard for logic or truth pales into blond pallidity next to the world-eating idiocy, narcissism and pure evil of the squirrel-headed monster whose egotism represents the ultimate menace to all we hold dear.

And yet – the Trump’s denial of climate-change, much of which arises, according to Krugman in the New York Times this week http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/03/opinion/the-id-that-ate-the-planet.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2Fpaul-krugman&action=click&contentCollection=opinion&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection

(What a url ) – from Donald’s contention that his hairspray no longer operates effectively because of climate change regulations designed to protect the ozone layer, is no doubt echoed by the Boris’ opposition to Europe. Darned Eurocrats and their stupid air quality regulations! While Boris ruled London, 70% of primary schools coughed under the weight of a disgraceful layer of air pollution farted out by diesel engines and precious industries Boris would grovel all over to protect. Europe wants to cut pollution. Has made rules which we will be able to flout with freedom and joy, once we leave Europe.

Two blond bumshells with the same mission: destruction. Armageddon. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are mounting their steeds my friends. Trump; Johnson; Putin and Kim…and I don’t mean Kardashian! The one I can’t spell….

  • On the tube I sat and wrote..

The writer should never stop writing. The writer cannot stop writing. The magic words are “what if…?”

    The Zoggian

There are not many orphans from the Zog wars who made it to planet Earth, but Gerdin was certainly one. At least that was the firmly stated opinion of Robert Root, and one he never tired of sharing with his classmates at Alderley Grammar.

“Check the ears,” he would whisper excitedly “Not pointy enough for a Romulan like Spock but pointy nevertheless and practically see-through!” As the Star Trek expert of 10C, Robert’s words were generally taken with a mock seriousness that was appropriate to his position as the Foremost of the Four, his collection of acolytes who so successfully set the tone for the whole of Year 10.

He happily pointed out the further evidence. The boy’s absence of proper knees was painfully obvious in the changing-room. ‘They don’t need knees on Zog’, Robert explained, ’they just float about in the low gravity and make Bleep noises’. Then there was his stoop, his inability to look people in the eye, his desperate attempts to be in the Gang. “Above all,” he added “He can’t even spell his name correctly! Who on earth would spell Gordon ‘Gerdin’ except for an off-worlder who had just learned English!” It was the final evidence they needed, and, led by the Four, the whole of Year 10 joyfully joined in the project of Alien destruction.

It became quite the right thing to torment the strange boy with a variety of verbal and sometimes physical attacks. They called him, to his face and behind his back, the “Zoggian”. His Letter of Application to be Five of the Gang of Four was torn up in front of his tear-filled eyes, and the entire project reached an ‘apogee of excellence’ (Robert’s words) when they locked him In a cupboard which they called his spaceship and made vooshing noises, assuring him they were sending him “back where he came from”

You would think some adult would have noticed…but it was not that kind of school. As far as the teachers were concerned, the boys should ‘sink or swim’ and we are, after all, writing about a period of the sixties in which only the strong survived, especially in posh grammar schools in the shires. Gerdin just had to bear it, and when he went home spattered with dirt and blood to adoptive parents who were, after all, rather busy and not, let’s face it, terribly fond of their bookish, undemonstrative ward, nothing was said beyond ‘Oh for heaven’s sake! Get cleaned up will you!’

So the campaign continued right into the Sixth when Gerdin’s incredible ability to do Maths beyond the capabilities of any child of his age made him a candidate for Oxford to the chagrin of the Four, none of whom was considered suitable.

    That was when he disappeared.

I would love to report that Robert was found very dead one day with a mysterious wound which could have been made only with an unknown possibly alien weapon, but he wasn’t.

    That is yet to come.

  • Flash Fiction: In a Phew words…

The suicide note said “sorry for the inconvenience”. He carried his iMac in his back pack. He had wiped everything off the hard drive, except The Novel. He planned to leave it with the note on the platform when he plunged onto the rails. On the back of the Note he had written all his passwords, to make sure the file could be accessed and read. Somebody will see my tragedy, he thought. The drama of my going will ensure my immortality.

The Novel was, of course, a masterpiece. He wasn’t the only person who thought that. For two years his characters had infested his life, waking him in the morning, swarming about the grubby kitchen  and the piled-high obstacle course that he lived in with Mother, whose obese, obsequious version of parenting had finally made his further existence impossible. And hers. Which was why she was lying in a mushed-up heap in between the piles of her so-treasured clutter,  not breathing.
“Where the hell are you going you twit” Caris asked, her voice strained with the grit he had written into it. “Where are you taking us?” “You’ll be safe!” He promised. “I am taking you to eternal life!” “But what about you?” Camden Dave asked, “where will you be?” “Who knows”, he said.
Suicide bomber on the Northern Line
A suspected suicide bomber is thought to have been prevented from causing mayhem on the Northern Line as he lost his footing on the Camden Town platform and fell to his death in front of a train. A suspect package he was carrying was detonated by police in a controlled explosion. “I noticed this man all sweating and nervous and talking to himself, and this backpack he was placing by the kiosk” station supervisor Dave Parsons said, “so I called the police.”
  • New old up the ladder see the world

    This 2016 year
    This
New old year in which I
    Meet the Government, try
    By consultation to identify
    Better ways
    And
Play a bit part in this movie
    This movie?
And do my bit to be
    Another manifestation of me
    Immersed in poetry
    Which movie?
    And
    Perhaps I may drop
My old love letters into the crop
    Of sewerage and slop
    (The cyberverse)
    In which sink or swim
    Umfaan! Some may remember him
He can play my Bit part
    As promised
    Perhaps I’ll strut
    Across a stage
    Or two
    Maybe even
    With you
    Or him
New old up the ladder flee the world
    And hope to miss
    Nemesis
  • Hereunder

Under this tree I sit and knit

Above my head birds sit and shit
Is it too much to wish
    They’d avoid rotting fish
    Or whatever makes them squit?
Oh give me a gun! Or at least a brolly
Are those who supply bird tables too dumb
    To include
    Imodium?

  • A Bite out of Apple

Evidence of my power and control is I haven’t (yet) thrown my iPhone, this marvel of technology and marketing at the wall or jumped on it with stiletto heels specially bought for this purpose, or punched it with the most devastating yakizuki ever devised by karate…DESPITE its total lack of loyalty, understanding, compassion or even basic logic!

The recent paste into Notes which happened because it refuses to send an email which happened because my password for BT for which I pay over £40 per month is not recognised   – is one letter per line! In a huge long line which reaches all the way down into my deepest fundament. And my attempt to paste it into the mobile edition of Word won’t work because Word wants me to sign in and that won’t work because the internet won’t work and neither will my password.
This infuriating password world! In which NOTHING can be done within this web of distrust and obfuscation in which one continually becomes entangled in multitudes of passwords forgotten or mistyped or frantically changed into something else bound to be forgotten or mistyped which means EVERY time one wants to use some software or app on this so-called “phone” is made into a long complicated infuriating process which leads nowhere except into Mobile  Rage, which must be one of the greatest causes of suicide, murder and road accidents.
Solution? For Heaven’s Sake! To use my phone I present my thumb to the button and presto, the world is open to me. SURELY it is simple enough to accept this as final evidence that I am who I am and every request made to any app on this phone comes from me??? iTunes! Word! BT! BA! Dropbox! It comes from MY PHONE. Therefore it comes FROM ME. Let’s stop this psychological bullying now and revert to logic. And loyalty. And compassion. And Rule of Thumb.
  • …on Pride…

A definition may help here. I do not intend to google a definition, I prefer to define my topic according to my view, so that I know what I am talking about. If I use somebody else’s definition, they are setting the agenda. This is my blog, I make the rules! How prideful…
So my definition is: Pride is that quality the expression of which puts the ego before the wants, wishes or understanding of others; based on the assumption that in some way one is superior to other people and therefore has the right to insist on pre-eminence and predominance. At any cost, and this is the main point. At anŷ cost.
This definition includes, of course, the person dangling over a cliff holding on to the branch of a tree refusing the helping hand, in the conviction that he can use his own strength to haul himself up even though the branch is breaking. Or the person who never admits he is wrong, and won’t accept that by refusing the helping hand he will plunge to his death. Or the captain of the Titanic, ignoring the lookout’s cries of “iceberg ahead” because he so desperately wants to reach New York in record time. Or the flasher convinced waving his willie in the tube train will make him irresistible to the girl sitting in the tube carriage. Or the man who wants to be president of the USA wearing a dead squirrel on his head and talking bollox and imagining himself a statesman.
Pride cometh before a fall, saith the bible. I do hope so.
Will the world actually miss the tree-hanger once he attempts levitation and yields to gravity? In the belief he will be admired for centuries, not be thought of as an utter asshole? Well, his friends who know that beneath the bluster and exterior Pride there lurks a wounded man, a person who was hurt badly and whose Pride is his response and attempt to survive. His partner who has seen him weep with terror at not being understood will miss him. Badly.
If we admit Pride is a problem, is there a cure?
Well, maybe this is. Or at least a first step. I don’t know if I am proud of it. I will know if it helps me.

  • Going Nuts in Brighton

Recently, was a delegate to the NUT (National Union of Teachers) conference in Brighton. Here is my Conference Diary:

Tangled in traffic firstly, with multitudes swarming into this sun-speckled place with its rambling Georgian deshabille,as a delegate at the National Teachers’ Union.
With my grin tucked away and all cynicism packed to go…are these my people? I doubt it. But perhaps no one is. Are. No two. Or three. Or many. How much time is wasted looking for one’s Karass! (Vonnegut: Karass = one’s true soulmates, whereas Granfalloon = those who think they are true soulmates, just because they come from the same town, or school, or profession) Close to my Karass = karateka, but not quite. I realised this on Wednesday evening when at a wonderful  Indian in Tooting, there was Jackie and Ken, Julie and Lou, Owen – all of whom I have trained with for nearly 20 years. All black belts. We have punched together, kicked and knife- hand blocked each other – travelled across the country to courses together, trained with great masters..we have stayed together, graded together, laid together (well they have)…yet over a dinner in which they got raucous drunk and had the same discussion or rant they always have – I felt totally A.N Other. The only time anyone asked me anything felt exactly the same as I felt in Mumbai when everyone was rattling away in Hindi, turning to me every fifteen minutes or so and asking in intensely accented English and in the most patronising tone, “So how are you liking India? Good yes? ” before turning away again.
I may be wrong about this but I think I have interesting things to say. And I want to hear people who have interesting things to say. Experiences. Opinions. Two way.
So the quiet before it all. I have parked (a mission! My car perilously squeezed into the smallest space in the world. It will be injured unless the next-door parker can levitate – perhaps I will re-park) booked into the  delightfully traditional Victorian Mercure sea front hotel and having a veggie rahmen …
At 3pm I meet with the inscrutable Stefan, our area chappie. Bouffant long hair flicked elegantly back from a babyish usually expressionless face, except for a rictus grin. Frequently in leather motorbike pants which delightfully accent his escaping belly, Stefan is tall and leans so far left one leg should really be shorter than the other. The hair is just Wrong on a bloke, especially such a blokish bloke. He is rather keen on getting me and everyone else signed up to the Socialist Workers’ Party, and I enjoy stringing him along, playing hard to get. Not going to happen.
He brought a pet SWP professor to a post-meeting meeting recently, to which I was rather nervously invited. After what I thought was a comprehensive and credible analysis of the Problem – which no left-leaner could disagree with, after much enquiry they presented their solution. Everybody out! Strike strike strike! Revolution now!
    Bollocks guys, too late.
The Workers have long ago been bought. With sixty inch tvs, with latest cars, with debts debts and debts, utterly bound, bought, sold, bagged. Finally beaten. The battle, herren Marx und Engels, is over. Narcissists and psychopaths rule the world. The environment is totally fucked. The corporations sit like Jabba the Hut on top of the corpses of once democratic institutions. The Trump factor proves me right.
    What is the solution?
No idea. And the SWP has no idea either.
    Sunday
Well there are some members of my Karass here. In fact I have never been in a huge public space with so many people who agree with me on so much. It’s frightening in a way, intimidating. Being small fish in big pond which appears not to be full of sharks is a unique experience. Friendly fish! None of whom seems to want to eat me whole.
    Monday
Yeh it’s all pretty nuts! Finishes tomorrow and I am shattered. I have never found so many people I agree with politically and in so many other ways. Lots if trans guys and girls too – was so impressed by one trans guy in particular who is so well adjusted –  came out at work (primary school) and was totally supported by staff and kids. Brilliant. So unlike Olivia’s experience, or even Ben’s.
I discover how far left I am. There is definitely a spectrum! I guess I am fifteen inches leftward on a twenty inch scale from zero. Which means, short of outright revolution but thoroughly hacked off by capitalist greed and their takeover of government – and education! There will be a massive rebellion (not quite revolution) on the idiotic capitalist plans they have for privatisation via forced academisation. Hell, it’s technical.
So I have met, laughed with, enjoyed such lovely people here. The price to pay was sitting for hour after hour listening to mindgrindingly boring speech after speech, each within the scope of horribly complicated Rules of Order. Followed by votes almost all of which were unanimously carried. Well, we’re all between 10 and 20 inches left of centre so not much to disagree on. Maybe Newsnight was right, nutty lefties wanting (the horror!) fairness and justice and proper education for our kids, despite the dictatorial decrees of a government with an agenda devoted to turning everything into a cutthroat business based on numerical targets which have no relation to the fact that humans are involved. Dedicated to creating kids who will be cannon fodder, compliant workers and above all, consumers pathetically keen to add to the profits of the Eton alumni and Americans who run the world; unaware of the effects on their health – obesity and diabetes – and even more critically, the destruction of the environment that is the inevitable result of the unbridled greed of the masters of the universe, the 1%.
The Conference ended with an excellent debate on Brexit – supported by the SWP and extreme left, a motion supporting withdrawal from the EU. Wankers! If we pull out President Boris (DC will go) will immediately sign up to TTIP, crush Unions, remove legislation protecting the environment and human rights, make buddies of every fascist dictator… Wankers! They say the EU is “the bosses union” – unlike, of course, the Tory party eh? And the Social Chapter and Human Rights court and and and….
My confidence in my colleagues was heartily restored as the motion was defeated on the basis that the NUT has no right to enter the debate and tell members what to vote. Not wankers.
Home now. So very tired. Will probably go to Calais next week…
  • Giving Birth to the Books…

The Laszlo’s Millions rebooted version is now available on Kindle and all other e- book formats, in paperback  – at last!

The novel had an incredibly long gestation. It was originally written in 1972! When I was roaming the hippie streets of London fuelled by terrible chemicals, filled with rampant idealism and rampant rampancy too. At home my dear wife stewed in our crazy commune, her mind skittering all over the place. She had been cracked open by LSD on the beach at Eilat, victim of 1000 mcg of purest Purple Owsley, the most powerful Acid in the world. What was left was schizophrenia, paranoia and terror. Not all the time, fortunately, because the baby had to be fed. My son. His first years in hippie hell. He may forgive me one day. I had hoped that the baby would stabilise her – but post-natal depression added a further layer of madness to our lives…so I retreated into fiction. The first version of Laszlo’s Millions clack-clacked out of our typewriter, my escape, my ultimate drug. You will detect so much of this real-life story in the novel. But please remember, ‘Novel’ means new. ‘Fiction’ means lies.

The manuscript, once finished, sat in a drawer amongst socks, safe while my life unravelled. She left, taking the child. I moved, moved again, made new friends and alliances, wrote stories novels poems. I never tried to get anything published. I was writing for myself.

Then marooned in a flat in Chelsea by the disintegration of a relationship, I let Umfaan’s Heroes out in the late 80’s. It escaped from me, clackety-clack straight from up there to paper. And once it had left me I knew this book was more than good enough and important enough to be published. I bought the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook, s directory of publishers and agents. I wrote to three agents, offering UH. I didn’t know that this is quite unethical! Form has it that one only writes to one agent or publisher at a time…one letter was returned address unknown. Both Curtis Browne and AD Peters wanted to see the manuscript.

Again, in my naivety I sent both of them a copy. Bad boy.

And both wanted to represent me, so I ‘interviewed’ each of them for the job! Bad boy.

AD Peters: establishment. Lovely offices. Antiques. Motherly agent. Curtis Browne: modern, thrusting. A new agent, young, sassy, ambitious. No names! Which did I choose?

The latter. Deep regrets plant no daisies.

Still, she got me Andre Deutsch, the fantastically respected independent publisher with VS Naipaul, Penelope Lively, Gore Vidal and other huge names on their list. August company! My editor, Esther Whitby, was and is a darling, who helped me craft UH into a delightful novel which, when published, got me my fifteen minutes of fame and fantastic reviews from Hilary Mantel and others. Also, appearances on great radio programmes, press, events with famous people, celebrity stuff. It was good. (Esther has published her own memoir of those days under the her maiden name Esther Mennel, entitled ‘Loose Connections’. About me, she says I am one of the authors she is ‘proudest’ to have published. Danger of Hubris… she is the Editor I am proudest to have been edited by.)

And of course, they wanted another novel.

And it just so happened, in my sock drawer….so Laszlo’s Millions blinked its way into the light and after huge rewrites and revisions with the help of the marvellous Howard Davies, was published on the eve of the Iraq War. Despite some publicity (chat shows and press mostly) it dropped into that black hole especially reserved for second novels, where they go to die….which meant that the third novel (Celine)  in what was going to be a trilogy, was rejected as a probable dud by Deutsch with scarcely a glance. Thank goodness! It’s rubbish!

Time trickled by. Got a job. Got a three-piece suit. Became a teacher.

Deutsch was taken over by a rapacious asset-stripper who stripped its assets and died unpunished.

And so last year I decided to reclaim my intellectual property. I searched, found somebody who claimed to have the rights to Umfaan’s Heroes and Laszlo’s Millions, wrote asking for them back.

The whole world of publishing has changed so much. With Kindle, Amazon, IBook, and all the others, the day of the huge publishing house has almost passed. Self-publishing is now honourable, no longer referred to as ‘Vanity Publishing’ by most people. I decided to self-publish, and with Amazon, Kindle, Bookbaby and Createspace, I can now offer both the novels in electronic form, as well as paperback.

I had to get UH scanned to produce an electronic version which I could edit. I used Boundbook scanning, very helpful. There were of course loads of errors which always happen in a scanning process. I hope I found and corrected them all! Offer: I will give £5 per error spotted to any reader! ??

UH hit the websites last year…and then I got to Laszlo’s Millions.

I didn’t want to get it scanned. I wanted to rewrite it, once again. I sat down and clackety-clack, the same incredible exciting process began all over again, the same magic which gave birth to Umfaan’s Heroes. There I was chortling and yelling and weeping too, making it all real and alive. The time with Howard when I did the first rewrite, that was nothing. There was no emotional involvement. It felt like a mechanical process, rather like, I assume, Jeffrey Archer churning out a formulaic story with no heart and no art whatsoever. This was so different…heart and art!

Hey I believe I am no egotistical braggart. Really. Ask my mother. Mind you, she won’t remember. Or my psychiatrist. That’s fine, I don’t have one. But I love it. I think it’s grand! I’ll go further. I think it’s grander than grand. I don’t want to boast, I feel as if it wasn’t really me who produced this book. I feel as if it was someone far better than me, someone who can write really great comedy – and tragedy too. No idea who.

Here is the description I wrote for the blurb: “Laszlo’s Millions is a tale of hilarious terror, a political satire as well as a zany comedy.  This multilayered story follows Tom in the most catastrophic year of his life as he struggles to convince a mysterious “jury” that he is a fit and proper person to inherit Laszlo’s Millions. Not easy when his psychotic wife is rushing about the place hammering nails into people she doesn’t like and the South African Bureau of State Security have recruited him as a spy…the time is the early seventies when the hippies chanted for peace and America made war. When Apartheid made millions of lives unbearable in South Africa – and our hero pops into swinging London like a cork from a bottle…! try it. Buy it. If you don’t laugh by page 3, I’ll give you your money back. “ . And I will.
