  • Trumpists and a Whole Load of Balls

    (Apologies – pun unavoidable)

    Image: BBC

Watching Ed Balls bump bellies with Trumpists (Travels in Trumpland with Ed Balls BBC TV) was deeply unsettling. The joy with which they laud their Saviour and their and his  lifestyle is infectious and our Ed was certainly infected. Let’s face it, being a shitkicking redneck has its upside. The guns, the trucks, the booze, the bellies. What fun.

Not to mention the Botox Babes of Miami. Whattt! The overwhelming stench of their overperfumed egos is stifling. I would just love to tip steaming shit over every one of them. Well, that’s the currency of their beliefs, they may well not notice the difference.

Then of course there’s Jesus. Ed missed a trick when he didn’t ask the Rev about the day of Judgement, the Apocalypse and Trump’s perceived role in it. Because I have it on very good authority (an Evangelical Rev in Dallas) that Trump was appointed by God to bring about the end of days. (Can’t bring myself to capitalise utter shit.) (sorry, Utter Shit.).

So there we have it. Let’s all tank up on moonshine (well that’s what the Trumpists do daily, literally and figuratively), gobble our grits with lashings of syrup and stand before god and his avatar, Herr Trumpf, and be judged. So we can all go to hell together.

Sigh. Our only hope is that justice will catch up with him before he drives the world into the concrete wall of his narcissism.

    *

I have no doubt that Ed remains true to his left-wing roots; I just wish he’d challenged these ghastly views more aggressively – and yes, sure we make a very big mistake not taking the legitimate grievances of the masses seriously enough. Had we done so, there may well have been no Brexit and no Trump. So strange that the liberal left seemed to have deserted the people it was originally meant to help and above all, defend. Many Brexiters are Socialists. And the rump of Trump’s constituency are working class (Balls said the opposite I think. He’s wrong.)

Neo-Liberalism is the enemy. It has allowed the rich to enrich themselves way beyond the dreams of absolute greed. It has empowered soulless corporations to destroy the environment in terrible race for profit. And Globalisation, while it has brought the world closer together, has facilitated this process. We (the masses and we, the bourgeois liberal left-wing intellectuals) agree on the causes and should not be surprised at the success of neo-fascist populism which promises solutions.

It is only when the promised solutions turn out to be deceptions aimed at further enriching the 1% and giving power to demagogues that this horrible trend will end.

  • A Coffee in Chiswick – from a phone box!

A Coffee in Chiswick – from a phone box!

This is the lovely Bella, and this is her micro-mini business, on the corner of Town Hall Avenue and Chiswick High Road in leafy W4.

Or rather, it was. Because from last Monday, it wasn’t.

Not surprising!  Considering Hounslow Council’s lean mean Enforcement Team, in the person of Ken Jobsworth, the sort of Council employee who thinks the word “vehicle” is better than the word “car”, decided to persecute it to death.

I witnessed the first time Ken (not his name, though it should be) arrived, as I was sipping my coffee and chatting about My Film with Bella. This stick-shaped beaky man with a clipboard was watching us like an anorexic hawk, scrawling strange councilesque language with no doubt a sharpened talon on a form, clipped to his clipboard by a clip which looked exactly as if it had been stolen from a Moyel. (the chap who removes foreskins from innocent Jewish babies who have never, incidentally, done him any harm.)

The word incidentally will feature quite a bit in this Report by the way.

So here it is again: Incidentally, I have been speaking about My Film quite a lot in the environs of the Red Coffee Boxs (their chosen name for the business. The extra s causes endless problems with my spellchecker and is therefore resented). In the three or so weeks they have been running, quite an amazing group of people began to swarm around Bella. Initially it was the local sleaze balls. Let’s face it, Bella’s gorgeous. So you’d expect every local girl-botherer to crawl out of the woodwork to offer her every damn incentive to go home with them, from promises of baby-sitting work to free trips on non-existent yachts. Eventually of course they realised that she’s more than capable of giving them a swift testicle-removing kick and they stopped bothering her.

Once the sleazes surrendered and faded away, the various creatives who live in this delightful village-like part of London began to gather. On one occasion I found myself sitting at the table with FOUR film makers, each at a different stage of their respective projects. Some films certainly seemed to be about to happen – but isn’t that always the case with most cinematic projects? And we had great fun pitching our ideas to each-other, while the wonderful Bella kept the local homeless man away by being kind.

I have met authors, journalists, all sorts of lovely people. And the difference between the Red Coffee Boxs and the cafe across the road is everyone talks! No hiding behind the ubiquitous (possibly dirty) Mac, or eyeing an iPhone as if, with sufficient interrogation it could yield pots of gold or the meaning of life. And everyone is so interesting! I mean everyone IS interesting, but when they have Apple brains it’s impossible for any sharing that’s not online to happen.

Except under that red parasol, on Turnham Green, with an excellent coffee and good company.

Truly amazing. Quite a few homeless men come for a chat and to cadge coffee. They are all treated with kindness and respect. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect. Even me.

So all was well until the Ken arrived. This is him serving his first “Notice”.

Incidentally I’ve deliberately chosen a blurry photo because I don’t want to identify him. Within the context of his job he was perfectly gentlemanly, if intensely jobsworth

Extremely painstakingly and in very vehicular language, he explained the Notice he was serving. It would seem, (translating here) that the business’ licence does allow them to serve coffee. However, only within the confines of the actual phone box. In other words, if both Barrista and customer are actually inside the phone box, that’s fine. He was therefore charging her with obstructing the highway. Sorry, that should read (nasally)  “Obstructing the Highway in such a way as to cause an Obstruction not merely to vehicular access but also to legitimate pedestrian traffic”

    Huh?

    £150.

“And I can be here any day and any time to ascertain whether you continue to trade and obstruct the highway. And I will.”

    And he was.

When the fine bill reached £600 the phone box was shut and ceased trading. The business owner is now submitting another application (the third) and we’ll see if the Council will honour their commitment to encouraging small business or whether the culture of jobsworthiness and vehicular language, which has certainly contributed (along with the internet) to the slaughter of retail in the High Street will win out.

Incidentally (!) YOU CAN HELP: We started a petition on getwestlondon.com which I have to admit I find horribly difficult to find on their site ( You might find it at the very bottom of this page: https://www.inyourarea.co.uk/feed/W44EU/Gunnersbury,Chiswick,Bedford%20Park

But if not, you’re a big boy/girl/person of another gender and should be able to find it!

    Save the Red Coffee Boxs!

  • Consuming Cannabis: WHO?

    Consuming Cannabis: WHO?

    Legalisation Part 3: Who, you?

I promised you that I would search out some Californian dope smokers  if I can find them! I have hunted high (sic) and low. I went to that Grateful Dead tribute concert and could only find two. I have searched Hillcrest, North Park, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach and environs and have found very few public smokers. So contrary to the dire predictions, legalisation has not resulted in an invasion of public spaces by legions of grubby pot smokers, emerging from the sewers like a plague of rats, waving bongs in the faces of old ladies, shoving joints between the lips of babies. (21 is the legal age for buying and smoking anyway). Perhaps there are more to be found in the drawing rooms of La Jolla in smoking jackets, having the odd Vape as they discuss Proust and the iniquities of the Trump.

So there’s only one thing to do: go to Seattle. O.k, I know this series is supposed to be about California and the effects of legalisation, and I have only discovered one: there are very few public smokers. Seattle, on the other hand, is in Washington State, where cannabis has been legal for recreational use since 2012. I will report from the smoke-filled state there in my next blog.

Meanwhile, let’s look at the stats.

There are few reliable sources for good data. By the very nature of the users, they can be a secretive lot even in states with legalisation. Various pro-pot organisations have produced reports: one of the most interesting is this one:

    https://www.cannabisconsumer.org/uploads/9/7/9/6/97962014/cannabis_consumer_demographics_and_behavior.pdf

    CLASS and CANNABIS

For those who can’t be bothered to read what looks like a rather academic piece, I’m nice, so I’ll sum up the main findings.

There certainly seem to be many middle-class smokers, in the age group 21 – 35, according to the Cannabis Consumers Coalition in this Report, drawn up a year before California legalisation. Fascinating reading, but bear in mind there is bound to be a pro-cannabis slant. Also, sample sizes were small and there is likely to be bias owing to self-selection of respondents through requests on social media.

Hm! And as for the rest, baby boomers are certainly well invested in using cannabis for its medical properties, and many studies suggest this group’s use of cannabis in general is rising exponentially. Edibles represent a growing proportion of use in the forms of candies, cakes, etc.

The Report states that “What is significant is that a combined 32.52% of adults 45 years or older consume Cannabis. This signifies that Cannabis consumers are professional adults.” Teachers, then! Doctors? Lawyers? CEOs? Trump?

“Just over a quarter of Cannabis consumers, have combined incomes of over $75,000, showing that cannabis consumers are professionals from all walks of life and not the stereotypical “couch potatoes” depicted in the media and in anti-Cannabis campaigns.” Oh. Not teachers then. Over $75k indeed. Which leaves politicians, doctors and Auntie Beryl (she has er own nail bar and I’ve always suspected her of deep involvement in criminality.)

“Cannabis consumers encompass a broad stroke of individuals and classes within the United States. No longer exclusive to the counter-culture and urban youth, Cannabis consumption is common among all classes in the United States, with those in the lower-middle class consuming the most. 27.46%”, All right, you’ve made your point. Teachers. So  does that mean I need to get myself into a school in Seattle, pop into the staffroom and simply inhale?

    MED VS REC

The majority consume daily – whether for medicinal or social use.

Medical use has been legal in California since 1996. In fact it was the first state to do this.(for a timeline of legalisation see this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_cannabis_laws_in_the_United_States
It was of those laws which bred a considerable industry devoted to flouting it.
In order to get a “prescription” to go to the legal dope dealer, you had to go to an official Pot Doctor first. These ladies and gentlemen (gotcha sensitivity reader) would sit like panjandrums behind desks littered with broken pencils, empty coffee cups and a dead pigeon. In their grubby white coats. They would peer through their bifocals at the patient and ask searching questions such as “Have you felt at all anxious recently? At all at all?” Or, “Have you been sleeping more or less than 24 hours a night?” or “If  there was a dead pigeon on this desk would it startle you?” If you answered satisfactorily either in the positive or the negative, the physician would write out a prescription for as much marijuana as you wanted. “Sixty Dollars please” would be the final diagnosis.
Of COURSE Cannabis can help (anecdotally) with anxiety, sleep disorders and a recent study suggests, with diseases such as MS (symptomatic relief at least) and it is being used in an extensive study on PTSD. The compounds in the cannabis Sativa and cannabis Indica plant have not yet been thoroughly investigated by science. It’s a vast field, and I promised not to bore you with technicalities. “… the variety of cannabinoids and terpenes found in the plant …provide a variety of therapeutic effects as well as euphoria and relaxation.” The point is, people who would never consider smoking the stuff to get high, could well be taking it in a variety of forms for medicinal or vaguely medicinal purposes.
Hey! Never forget the power of a placebo! Whether it’s effective or not in many cases cannabis will cure you if you believe it will.
THE FLOWERS THAT BLOOM IN THE SPRING (Tra La)

“Flower” consumption means smoking. I don’t know what Dabbing is (somebody please enlighten me). “Edibles” is a massive field. They make all sorts of foods with a dash of cannabis. Well, it’s a herb, right? Brownies were always one of the main ingestion methods back in my day. I remember a parent party we absolutely trashed by spiking their cakes with weed. No doubt there were many pot parties that weren’t meant to be, as a result of a mischievous teenager.

The range of edibles nowadays goes from confectionary to baked to drinkables.

    Grass Tea: A Recipe.

    Heat water until it boils

Place in a pot on the stove and add grass to taste. Generally a heaped teaspoonful of moderately low grade per person. Adjust amount according to the strength of the grass. (When I say “Grass” I am referring to the stuff that grows in lawns of course. If I were referring to marijuana that could be interpreted as encouragement to break the law in countries where the substance is still banned)

Allow to come to the boil and leave for eight minutes.

Strain into a beautiful teapot and dip a teabag of your favourite tea in and out a few times.

Drop in a cinnamon stick and if desired, a spoonful of honey.

    Serve.

    Don’t offer me any ok?

    NEWBIES AND OLDIES

It seems that most users today have been using the stuff for some time. No wonder most teachers are bonkers. The questions I would like to get answered in my research in Seattle is this: To what extent does long-term cannabis use impact on those shibboleths of the anti-cannabis lobby: Short term memory; Ambition and decisiveness; mental health; addiction.

Look. I’m not going to get answers which are anything more-or less than anecdotal, right? Only a major academic study after legalisation has been in place in years can really give answers in those four areas. Nevertheless, interviews and observational data would form a good basis for more in-depth research so I’m going to do it. Besides, chances are it will be fun.

    BONGING THE BANK

One of the most interesting findings from the study. This needs to be compared intelligently with the other stats. I mean, what do they spend on edibles vs smoking? Medicinal? If the majority of cannabis use is “flower” i.e. smoking, this suggests that a great deal of the pot is sourced expensively on the black market. But was the majority of the research in places where it was legal? Many unanswered questions. Naturally the pro-pot lobby will suggest that black market pot is more expensive than that dispensed legally. But is it? $300 per month seems like quite a lot.
    BUYER BEWARE

As you can see the majority of respondents to that particular survey buy their pot on the black market, i.e. from the friendly local dope dealer or, increasingly, on the web. One user boasts they can order online and get cannabis delivered to their house within half an hour. That’s better than Amazon.

So now the question is, should we legalise in the UK? At this point I have no opinion. I want to examine all the options and go through available information before I make my own mind up. As should we all. So in the next blog, I will look at (as far as I can) the effects of legalisation on users and on society.

  • MARIJUANA – Wholesale!

    MARIJUANA – Wholesale!

In my quest to uncover the new dynamics of this new business, finding Mamacita was not difficult in the least. I only had to ask a man who asked a man who asked a man who handed me a phone number without any hesitation or reluctance. “Of course you can darling,” she said when I asked to spend a morning with her. “Especially if you’re cute. Did I tell you it’s traditional to deal drugs in the nude?””

“Is it?” I asked, rather aghast.

“Joking with you!” she said. “Or maybe not if you’re cute. Anyway, come and get it! Only no pictures.”

    “No pictures?”

    “Unless nude”, she said.

And so I found myself facing this formidable representative of the New Wave of legal marijuana, way out in Escondido, a far suburb of San Diego, at the end of a sweltering drive up the 15. The office and warehouse are in an industrial estate, squashed between manufacturers of fish, or perhaps fish tanks, car exhaust fitters and a brothel. There is no sign above the door and I had to call to request someone to come out and get me.

Mamacita Lupita  sits like an over inflated barrage balloon on the  small leather-stuffed chair plonked behind her smart office desk, behind a double-screened computer. She is a woman of about fifty, very blowsy, slightly moustachioed and looks every bit the CEO of a new marijuana startup in the newly liberated republic of California. Despite her appearance she is not Mexican. Apparently her ancestors were from Greece. So bad luck Trumpman, one stereotype destroyed. Everybody in this new business has a nom de guerre, an assumed name by which their business associates know them and Lupita decided what the hell, might as well confuse everybody.

“We are the wholesalers,” she explains. “We supply the retailers and the manufacturers of products from the weed. We manage large amounts. We are waiting for a delivery this morning. You will see how that works.”

While we are talking, people continually wander in and out of the office. Cellphones chirp or chortle or buzz.Everyone seems to have one plastered to their fingers. It seems they all regard it necessary to have their conversations on speaker. Which makes human-to human interaction complex and interruption-prone.

Most of the cellphone conversations seem to be this side asking why that side hasn’t arrived yet or sent pictures or left yet. “If I could give you some of the excuses we get,” Mamacita laughed, “You would wet yourself. They say broke down, was robbed, fell over in dog  shit and snapped my false teeth, anything rather than I got stoned and forgot to deliver the consignment.”

“It must be terribly confusing having to deal with stoned people all the time,” I say.

“Oh they’re not all stoned! None of us here are stoned!”

    “Really?”

“Of course not. We are business people! I used to get stoned when I was young. But you know what,”she added, tapping the side of er generous nose, “Everything has changed SO MUCH since those days.”

“I did too,” I said “but not for many years.”

“It was a huge learning curve,” she said. “I had to find out everything about the product. Lucky I have these wonderful JJ’s around me to keep me on track.” She waved her arms around the office, pointing out some of the people floating in and out.

    “JJs?”

“So we all have our Business Names. All my people have to have J names. Preferably foreign. That one is Jules.”

    “Hi Jules”

“This Jemima.” Hello.“Joe, Johnjohn. And of course, Jesus.”

Intriguingly, all the males seemed to be designed by the same Italian. Portly, balding, moustached and tattooed. Apart from the security guy, a mountain called Wolverine, an MMA fighter with the most winning smile and arms that could strangle a rhinoceros.

There are two females apart from Mamacita. Jemima is head of sales. A chirpy blonde of around thirty, she has a sincere beauty which has never needed the application of lipstick, foundation or other chemical blemish made for the enrichment of cosmetics houses. She is spookily efficient, darting from A to B or even C, phone in hand, dealing, demanding, doing. Dolores is  the Office Girl, nose in a computer, calculating, calculating, seeking product.

During my discussion the J;’s seem to have nothing particular going on. Just chirping into phones, wandering in and out with coffee or sandwiches. I am yet to see any drug dealing. We’re still waiting for the delivery. And discussing excuses.

    Pause for music.

What I learned about marijuana in these legal days:

There are various qualities and varieties of product stemming from the Marijuana plant. This includes the flower as well as something called trim, which is the by-product of pruning a marijuana plant as it grows. Because trim includes a very small amount of THC, it is the product that is used for extraction to produce crude, distillate and other products as the base ingredient for vapes, edibles, medicinal products and shatter, and crumble. Back in the Stoned Age in South Africa we called this quality, the ragged offcuts of marijuana “majut”. The most despised kind of weed. What you would smoke if there was absolutely nothing else around. Trim (and all commercial marijuana) has to be by law free of pesticides and if the State finds any pesticide in the product you are selling they will destroy it all and you could be fined. Every wholesaler has to have a license for buying, for selling and for distributing. Which means no merchant would risk losing their licence by being caught with illegal product (! Huh?) It is relatively cheap to buy, so it is my hostess’ bread and butter. She sells large quantities at small margins.

    Getting a feel for trim

When you move into higher realms (sic) the most respected of course is called flower. We used to refer to it as ‘heads’ but it’s very different now because of, let’s face it, genetic modification. GM means the flowering heads of the plants are fantastically compact and dripping with resin. And the tiniest little pinch in a spliff will probably make our average old hippie utterly bonkers. This might explain why the average old hippie is not smoking the stuff.

“Shatter” is the real deal now with the youngsters. Shatter comes in a flat plate which I suppose looks like a poppadum. You crunch bits off it, put it in a pipe or Bong and apparently you direct something like the flame of a flamethrower toward it to make it burn. Supposedly this is absolutely brain splatting.

I asked Mamacita if we are getting near to having packs of 20 rolled joints like cigarettes and she showed me a pack in development which looks exactly like a cigarette pack; but she tells me that they’re quite expensive to develop and there is a new rule that they have to be childproof. How on earth do you childproof a cigarette pack and why? Children would have to know how to set fire to the cigs and somehow learn to inhale pungent smoke. I’m doubtful. Mind you, they can operate iPads at 3….

The common smoking weed is called crumble because you will crumble it into a spliff and set fire to it in the good old-fashioned way.

My education over, my attention switches to the arrival of a large truck backing into the warehouse

    .

At last the J’s have something to do! And they swarm about, in and out, unloading huge bags of trim. Bags are opened, pored through and checked for quality. The smell is not one I am familiar with: it’s a herby, grassy smell yes but not really the reek of marijuana. Bags of Majut! Legal weed! Bags and bags of the stuff! When I was young I dreamed that one day I might see this. I reckon that if I added together all the dagga (what we called weed in SA – pronounce the g’s like the ‘ch’ in ‘loch’ ) – I ever smoked, all my friends ever smoked, the entire University ever smoked it would be less than I saw this morning.

    bags and bags

And it wasn’t long before the customers arrived. Each bag weighs 25 – 30 lbs and customers left with one or two or three bags each. The transactions were done efficiently in the office by Dolores. All cash, of course. Piles of bills. If I were to add together all the money I have ever earned blah blah. Nonsense. But trust me it was loads. Wolverine wafted about purposefully and I have no doubt there were weapons available, should they be needed. But Mamacita assures me that is most unlikely. “We’re all legal now!”

The scale is awesome. But I am assured that there are some much larger operations. “The time will come,” she said “when the big corporations will step in. Watch Monsanto, watch the Pharma boys, as soon as the regulations ease up – and they will – the Corps will see a killing.”

“What will you do when that happens?” I ask.

“I want an efficient, ethical, profitable business which will look good for the accountants. Then I sell! It’s my retirement plan. Meanwhile I will have a good time and look after my Js. And let the Dolores take care of itself! That’s why I call our accountant Dolores. Get it?”

“It’s all about the Dolores, right?!”

“No no no. It’s all about the customer. Treat them right and the dollars follow.”

“I suppose you want me to get undressed before I leave?” I asked playfully.

“Don’t be silly darling,” she said, tweaking my nose. “Too old, too fat, too ugly!” and she roared with laughter.

(Some names fictitious. The rest isn’t.)

  • Diary of a Drug Dealer? California legalises!

Diary of a Drug Dealer? California legalises!

    PART 1

Greetings from San Diego, the southernmost city of the newly cannabised Republic of California where I sit on a balcony overlooking a sea which, until yesterday, lurked beneath dirty cottonwool skies, grubby with unshed rain. There is still an unfriendly chilly wind which keeps me from the beach. Well, for now. I did try it yesterday, but frankly we didn’t  see eye-to-eye. For me, sun goes with beach. Not grey puffy interventions between me and melanomas.

    Wot no plastic?

As you probably know if you’ve been following my blogs, I have friends and relatives in San Diego. This is mostly because my family emigrated to the US almost exactly 30 years ago, and I have visited frequently since. Being a smart kiddo I established myself in London. I must have known one day America would get its comeuppance in the shape of a fat demagogue with zero dress sense. Of course being 13 hours away from Mother who has Alzheimer’s is sad and that makes each visit more harrowing. So much so that I have considered (if briefly) whether a spot of marijuana would make things a bit better. For both of us.

    Pot and Me

Last night nephew Isaac took me to the Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chilli Cook Off, a sprawl of stalls selling food and fancies, with of course several stages of live music. Including a Beetles cover band, a Grateful Dead cover band, a Rolling Stones cover band a Fleetwood Mac soundalike and who knows what else these clever locals can cover. Admittedly most of the covers can best be described as approximations, which did not deter legions of ex-hippies from strutting dancing gyrating and body-popping all over the place.

The Bank Manager has a groove

I had a strong feeling that one of them was my bank manager (retired). The others looked like retired Obstetricians or Gynaecologists or Professors of Oriental Logistics or perhaps even the local Vegetarian Butcher. Both male and female of course. The women seemed to have eschewed the expected stereotype of Mother Earth meets the bag lady and opted instead for middle-class granny in jeans.

And here’s the strange thing: in a state which has just legalised cannabis for recreational use, I neither smelled nor saw a single spliff, or joint, or reefer, or doobie, or  even a vape. (That’s a lie. I saw one of each but if I told you it would destroy the impact of the point I am about to make). I mean come ON you guys! And girls! (Sensitivity Reader note: I avoided the trap.) Forty years ago you were dreaming that one day you would be standing in a street in Ocean Beach listening to the Dead (or soundalike) or the Stones (or soundalike) or any damned screeching guitar-soloing drum-maddened raw-singing combo stoned out of your heads in a country free of anti-pot laws – ? Eh? I certainly was!

And yet here we stand, we ex-hippies pretending like mad to be stoned out of our heads bopping away with no trace whatsoever of what was once our favourite drug. IN a place where the passing cops are more likely to be stoned than we are.

    WTF, as the kiddies say.

There’s only one thing to do at a time like this: Research. Right! So here’s the plan: in the next week I am going to find a drug dealer and somebody who actually smokes the stuff.  Not to buy anything, but just to research this: what has been the effect of legalisation so far in this state? And why?

See the next exciting episode right here in a few day’s time!

  • A Bangup in Dallas

    A Bangup in Dallas

What most people know about Dallas; this is where President Kennedy was killed by a sniper firing from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository – this building.

    GUNS

The stereotype: Dallas is the hub of climate-change denying gun culture. Cars with engines the size of a house. Plastics everywhere. Conspicuously outrageous consumption. And ultimate self-indulgence.

Lee Harvey Oswald’s view of a Dallas Street. Look carefully at the road and pick out the white cross where the lethal bullet entered Kennedy’s brain

It’s certainly partially true. But the city also has some of the sweetest people in the world.   Kindness radiates. Love is in the air. And ineffable sweetness.

Physically this is a web of interconnected and unconnected shopping malls bound about with wide sweeping highways, twisting in every direction, often up. Surrounded by a sprawl of suburbs, leafy or not.

As to the gun culture: yes, evidence everywhere. But no guns. Or at least, I saw none in public. I did see many signs implying that anyone trying to take a Texan’s gun would have to prise it from his or her cold dead hands. There are signs at many restaurants and other venues: no guns to be visibly carried, with threats of terrible fines and imprisonment for anyone carrying an unconcealed firearm. Does this mean those bulges in Texan’s pockets don’t simply mean they are pleased to see me?
One of my friends who invited me here took me to his beautiful house in the suburbs. From the outside, a neat bungalow-style home with no pretensions. The inside, like the Tardis, is much bigger than you’d think. High-ceilinged, wooden-beamed living room open-planned to a well appointed kitchen. All very tasteful with a warm family feel.
H took me to his study and showed me his gun cupboard. Hey, a good family man with a great job in a big retail chain. Good citizen. He came here from the UK around ten years ago. I taught him Martial Arts in school – the empty-hand version.  Cupboard: a vicious semi-automatic rifle; a single-barelled pump-action shotgun small and vicious; a Kalashnikov. A box of plenty bullets for all of them. H could withstand a siege.
    “Why?” I asked.

    “Because I like them.”

H has looked after me like a celebrity. This is my second five- star hotel, and waiting for him in the lobby of the Westin Hotel boy have I seen some asses! Great blobby masses of men and/or women, some tattoo-bedecked, black white and oriental. This is blobby city for sure. Here overindulgence is a lifestyle bordering on the religious. The words “it’s my right” hang in the air everywhere. Luckily there’s so much space in Texas! So they have the right, apparently, to eat the world.
    From the hotel window
    LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Go together like a Sikh and a Christian. Sometimes.
The wedding (the reason I came) certainly had a heart. The marriage of a superbly aristocratic Dallas Princess to a boy of Sikh extraction in a very traditional Christian ceremony. Not in church mind you…was simple, pleasant and fun.
    A beautiful couple
Like all weddings, the bride’s family sat on one side of the aisle and the groom’s on the other. The potential for awkwardness was certainly there. Especially as one side was American white Texan, the other Indian.
Yet her family seemed to accept the brown boy into their world without any visible discomfort. In fact her brother, a huge man in a stetson and jeans said, with some evident surprise on meeting the groom’s family, “Hey! These are some really nice folks y’all” So one stereotype at least. Not just the stetson but the y’all at the end of each sentence.
A seriously beautiful couple. A salutary lesson for me, not to assume all Texans are racist shitkicking assoles. In fact these were some really nice folks! Y’all. I have no doubt that if I were to dig I’d find some views which would make me puke. So I didn’t dig.
    MORE ASSES
Last night dinner with an Evangelist reverend and his family and he confirmed what I learned in a Channel 4 news broadcast months ago: He has a large congregation and many connections throughout the Christian evangelical community: Trump’s agenda, driven by his evangelical advisors, is to bring about the End of Days as per the Book of Revelations in the Bible. To this end, Jerusalem needs to be the capital of Israel, the Temple needs to be rebuilt – before this happens there will have to be a terribly bloody race war. Then all the dead will be resurrected to be judged and sent to heaven or hell. Then Jesus will come. By the way, no non-Christians will enter paradise. Trump believes this shit. Do you?
    Shit shit shit
That’ll teach me to dig! I had to say with all my heart to the very Rev, “I cannot agree with you and I never will” to which he replied condescendingly that the mind of God is so vast there’s just no point in little me having any opinion whatsoever on this matter.
    LEAVING or, Conclusions and Recommendations!
    Mess
Dallas airport is a mess. Lines and lines of frustrated people hoping to get through security in time for their flights. Shifted from line to line by officious little kings of little kingdoms, petty uniformed pedants whose rule books so exceed their intellectual capacity, no one is going to get any kind of easy time.
Finally through, assisted by a monster slab of prime Texan beef probably called Brad or Caleb, who had taken my lack of a passport (as my flight is internal I thought a driving license would do as ID and my passport was in my checked bag) who made sure I had every security check in his copious manual, including a pat down which, I assure you, was pure homo-eroticism. For him anyway.
I am at last on my seat in AA flight xxx to San Diego in exactly the seat I did not book. I ALWAYS book a window seat as I can’t accept crossing a country without knowing the way back.
    Not my window
The grey man next to me is earnestly reading his bible just in case.
So it turns out Dallas is not the bumhole of a farting elephant after all. At worst its a sugar-coated  very rich cake with icing a foot deep. Deep inside there is probably a heart, stuffed as it is with dollar bills. As I said, the city is an interlaced concatenation of highway and shopping malls, surrounded by a sprawl of suburbs. The people are adorable, my host and hostess especially. They made every effort to give me a good time and they certainly succeeded. The wedding was delightful, and the opportunity to meet and talk Martial Arts with my two Founder Members again was brilliant.
And Dallas has an astounding Samurai Museum!
Who you looking at!? Meeting a friend
    …San Diego, here I come…
  • What the HELL is happening to New York?

What the HELL is happening to New York?

Today’s New York is full of pricks, spears, ice pyramids, and the chimneys of crematoria, poking their geometrical penises arrogantly skyward, in defiance of God and challenging him to bloody get on with Armageddon once and for all. In fact, that’s probably the whole idea. And every day, new ones. Each uglier and more challenging than the last.
Towering above the classic twenties and thirties buildings of Central Park, another prick goes up
The building boom has made a city once full of pride and power into a megalopolis of arrogance and aggression, defiance and pure tastelessness. A place where money drips with cocaine and arsenic and bemused tourists stare up into the towers and chimneys of Trumpocracy with disbelief and repulsion.
Two fingers to God at Columbus Circle
It really feels as if the new New York has been taken over by an alien and deeply evil force, one which is gradually infiltrating every aspect of the life of this city and will eventually turn everything  into a parody of every evil dystopia ever written.  And sitting at the hub of the whole place, on Fifth Avenue, is where the whole plot has been hatched and is being run – Trump Tower.
This is where the creatures of the swamp gather to plot Armageddon
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have passed through these doors on their way to the Boardroom
    Trumpland
That’s the side entrance used by Toad himself and his brood. The front entrance is very public. All KINDS of untermenschen like you and me are allowed in. To shop and spend!
The golden cakehole of the President
Floor to ceiling gold. And shops. And Starbucks too. (Shame on you.)
    Look what I bought!
My contribution to making America grate again
I had to have proof I’ve entered the golden asshole of the Beast.
Just outside ANOTHER Trump tower (this one at Columbus Circle) (yes there are quite a few Trumpmonster edifices in New York.) we see the goal. The world is not big enough for the Trumping ambition. Cuz tells me the Trump himself organised to have this world-sculpture placed beside his apartment block. To remind him of the conquests that remain..
The world ain’t big enough for the Swamp Creatures
Incredibly, in a chic shopping centre within a few yards of the entrance to this Columbus Circle Trump Tower, a bronze statue of the man himself!
A woman measures Toad’s penis while his female avatar dashes by
So here we go. This mega-powerful group of billionaires, infected by the virus of Christian evangelist fundamentalism and a belief in the literal truth of the Book of Revelations, rush us toward what they would describe as the End of Days.  They seriously believe that there will be a Second Coming of Christ, they will all be taken up to Heaven and the rest of us will be consigned to Hell. That’s liberals, humanists, Muslims, you, me  et al. The Jews, they are convinced, will all convert at the last minute. In the process, the Trumpists intend to enrich themselves beyond the dreams of avarice and to cynically use the gullibility of a population too willing to believe in the fulfilment of dreams.
    Not him:
    Memories of kinder days…
    or him
    Trumps Accountant surrenders
    Or him
The homeless are everywhere. No place for them in the Kingdom of Trump.
  • New York, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle – an odyssey across Trumpamerica –

New York, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle – an odyssey across Trumpamerica –

Beaten into submission, they wait to board the BA flight 175 to New York and so do I. The hum of talk is soft, the lines are long. I will be amongst the last to board.

There is something so civilised about my fellow passengers. I am  used to the San Diego flight with its holidaymakers – Brits wittering with fury at the confiscation of their suntan lotion or plastic bottles of water by Security, as if they couldn’t read the flashing warning signs, all of them in very plain English. But this lot look business, or academic. Conservative or Libdem voters if British, or socialists of the Champagne sort, Islington dwellers. Democrats if American.  A load of liberals.
I feel at home with this lot. Should the plane crash we will all retain our dignity and no-one would be as sexist as to expect women and children to deplane first.
I am going to be severely pressured to abandon my dignity on this trip, certainly in the second quartile. The trip is like Gaul divided into four parts:
Part 1 NY; part 2 Dallas; Part 3 San Diego; part 4 Seattle.then back to San Diego and fly home.
An Odyssey across Trump’s America. An exploration of its contradictions through cousin (NY) then Dallas, to a wedding of an Asian to a white American (yes, in Texas!) then Mother in SD with her slow, sure Alzheimer’s, then brother in Seattle with his disturbing, brilliant son. I will post blogs from each experience and I can promise a helluva ride for both of us.
Part 1: A Cousin in  NY
(this is likely to be the tame, civilised chapter so that I can give you a false sense of security. If it’s too tame, catch up later. )
E is more like a brother than a cousin. A few months younger than me, we grew up together, went to the same school, suffered so many growing pains together. I had many more of those than he did, as he will admit. In Ruggerbugger High (King Edward VII school, Johannesburg)  I was mercilessly bullied by the jocks and racists who ran the place – both students and teachers. I was seen by them as an effeminate kaffirlover. Because my parents were political and opposed Apartheid, as did I. And perhaps I was effeminate. I was certainly a sport-hating book loving type, more interested in acting and reading than the average boneheaded racist student. And E shared many of my interests. But got away with it! He probably had the right friends, insiders, the academic elite, who, more brains than beef, had the grudging respect of the cave men.
My friends were outsiders like me. The Fat Boy, the Snob Antisemite, unpleasant characters. So, probably, was I.
School finished, adventures started, the Army intervened. Conscription, 9 months of uniforms and petty posturing, pretending to be soldiers. We went different ways – he to the State President’s Guard because he was clever and about to study medicine. Me to the Army Band because I was stoned and likely to be a hippie. Then…well adventures, many of them lied about in my first two novels, Umfasn’s Heroes and Laszlo’s Millions.
    Heathrow No Go
A few days ago I made a brief appearance on TV to protest against the proposed third runway  at Heathrow and here I am in seat 49A of this fat-bodied particulate-spewing environment-eating 747 on the runway. Having just had a remarkably easy snake-experience, slithered theough all the demeaning hoops of check in, shoes and belt temporary bereavement, navigating through acres of fancy stores with their wallet – magnets (taxiing) and smoothly via transit to the gate.
1.9km walk. Altogether, from arrival at Heathrow to stepping into the plane.
    A breeze.
But that’s not the point!!! My convenience comes at a massive price to my city and the environment  ( take off!!!) (even the take off wasn’t dramatic) and seriously if I have to use Gatwick in future, I’ll just get up a little earlier.
Ok back to E. Years passed. E became a doctor, I became  a hippie. Married. Stuff. E moved to London.
So did I. E doctored, I hippied. E lived on Sloane Avenue, very expensive in a flat the kitchen of which was the size of an American fridge. I lived in World’s End, not far from him, but my dwelling was indeed at the end of the world. Gangsters whores thieves hippies. We saw each-other occasionally and one day discovered our secrets. Another story. When you’re old enough, I’ll tell you.
Years passed. I got a job and a lover and moved to Chiswick. E upscaled to an attic in Cheyne Row. Beyond posh. And a kitchen the size of two American fridges.
E got a job in New York and asked me to manage his flat for rental. Very fine. Amazing tenants. The purple American. The corporate pig people. Then, for some reason, the supply of tenants dried up just when I had a cataclysmic row with partner, and so I became the tenant.
    Oh Oh Cheyne Row
    With a Sage below
    And Albert Bridge
    At dark aglow
And a kitchen the size of a fridge!
I loved the flat. And eventually, when I could afford it I offered to buy half and E agreed.
More years passed. I wrote my novels, became a teacher. E progressed up ladders from job to job across America. From NY to Philadelphia, then Washington then Omaha Nebraska and back to NY. Mostly as a paediatric  haematologist, but later doing research for pharma companies. He just lost the will to watch children die. Instead he developed some amazingly efficacious drugs for cancer treatment. There are people alive today who wouldn’t be, if it wasn’t for E.
I think I visited him in each of those. And here I go again, the first time in years.
Eventually when he needed the money I had to sell. Broke my heart but there was no choice and besides, walking up and down those stairs to the fourth floor had wrecked my knees. So it was a good thing.  And the proceeds of the sale of expensive Cheyne Row set us both up to buy damn good apartments, his in New York and mine inChelsea.
Coming in to land now over the plastic-spotted sea
    Poughkeepsie ahead here beneath me
a bay into which a trident-shaped pier intrudes
    a motorboat
    yacht
    cruise liners
    Brooklyn bridge at last
buildings carved from shit and glass
    crusted streets, moving bugs
there at last Manhattan in fog
    fingers pointing accusingly to god
somewhere out if sight Liberty stands bereft
    Almost dowwwwn
    Jfk

An extract from my novel in progress, provisionally titled Ragazzo, but may end up being published as OPERA

The first night was two months away which sounds like quite a long time. It is, after all, about sixty days, which is 60 x 24 hours, and you can work out how many minutes and seconds that is for yourself. I assure you Feddy knew the number. Which is 1,440 hours. Which is 86,400 minutes. Which equals 5,184,000 seconds. Each of which Feddy was determined to make count.

Poor Feddy! He was, after all, cast in the role of dictator upon whom the entire state depended. And remember, he had never directed an Opera before. Certainly Capo was a help. Also, a major hindrance. To describe their relationship as prickly would be to underestimate hedgehogs. To assert that there was a clash between their temperaments would be to misunderstand the sound of cymbals in a war.

It didn’t start as a war. Initially, Feddy was impressed by the gravitas and showmanship of the Italian. His flamboyant clothes, the moustache which resembled a writhing, living pet which had attached itself to the upper lip of the Maestro like an hirsute leech. The incredible jodhpurs with their stains and fustian stench. Were you to ask Feddy to describe the man he would certainly add a whip to the aforegoing description, even though we know he never carried one.

They say it is not good to have two women in a kitchen. The same applies to two directors of a single opera, both coveting the title of “Maestro”.

The first days were more-or less without serious incidents. This was the phony war period when Capo would watch and listen while Feddy took each member of the cast through their lines, accompanied by Fr Muller on the piano. The official – and agreed remits of the two Directors was, Feddy: music; Capo: Stage. However as we know, Capo had quite some experience at both, and for the first few days he had to bite his tongue, purse his lips and cross his legs. Every now and then words or sentences or phrases would escape the prison of his jaw. And as those seconds flew, the number of words and sentences and phrases grew. In direct proportion, Feddy’s irritation grew too.

It started with Rodelinda’s very first aria, L’empio rigor del fato

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf23OeCaUt0

“It’s about the wickedness of fate, darling”, Feddy says as his beloved Gertrude stands next to the piano, waiting for Fr Muller to play the intro. “Now sing for us.”

So simpering Gertrude places the music on the stand, turns sweetly to the page, and begins. “L’empio rigor del fato….”

Watch their faces, Feddy and Capo. On Feddy’s, his love for this luscious example of German womanhood, a creature Wagner would have loved to cast as Brunnhilde, this perfect parody of Pre-Raphaelite perfection simpers her way through an aria which is supposed to be a railing against cruel fate. For Feddy, the performance is lush. He is so thrilled that she manages to get through the whole thing, more-or less on the notes. This for him is a huge relief and progress indeed.

As we watch Capo’s face we see something rather different. Frustration, confusion, then comprehension perhaps, if the writhing of the moustache is anything to go by. He too is thinking of the wickedness of fate.

“Bravo!” Feddy claps when the thing is finished.

“Thank you! Thank you!” Gertrude soaks up his adulation, looks over at Capo in his chair and sees no confirmation.

“You see why I have chosen her Maestro!” Feddy says.

“Yes I suppose so Maestro.” Capo replies.

At this stage both our Directors are still addressing each-other as Maestro, to show mutual respect and understanding.

But the word “suppose” hangs in the air. Feddy decides to attempt to snatch at it. “Gertrude will win the hearts, all of them, won’t she Maestro.” Partly addressed to Gertrude, to boost her confidence.

“She is very – heartfelt Maestro”. Capo replies.

“Oh yes! What a good point Maestro.”

    “Only – “

“Please! Please! Any suggestions are gratefully received!” Feddy gushes.

“Just perhaps, we can have a little more – “

“You didn’t like it?” Gertrude asks

“Yes yes of course I liked it. Just Remember – “

“What? I remember the lines well!”

“You are upset. You are complaining about Fate. Perhaps a little less – “

    “Less what!”

    “Less what!”

“Less what Maestro? Please Gertrude – “

“Maybe a little less – beautiful. More – angry.”

“Angry?” Gertrude is getting tearful. “But this is only the first time! I was singing it for the notes, not the expression!”

“She will of course put the acting in Maestro. I will coach her.” Feddy is alarmed, feels this rehearsal slipping away from him.

“I can act! You know I can act! Why are you being so nasty!”

    “Yes yes I know – “

“I don’t have to take this from my husband-to be! You can stuff your bloody opera!” At which she throws the part high into the air where it exercises an excellent loop-the loop and lands, open and unreachable, on a stayrope.

    Exeunt Gertrude, in tears.

Capo shakes his head. He is slightly amused. “Very melodramatic Maestro,” he says. “At least it shows she has spirit.”

Feddy sighs. “She certainly has that, Maestro,” he says.

Watching from the wings our Guido waits like a spider, eyes glued to the head of his prey with its shining gold, her pink cheeks streaked with tears. And when she flees, Guido follows.

He catches up with her in the street,

The midday streets are streaked wet. The sky is wet too, and our soon-to be united pair are being soaked through.

“Fraulein! Freulein!” He shouts and eventually, as she stumbles clickety-clack over the wet cobbles, she hears and turns.

“Liebe Gott! What do YOU want!”

“I saw that. I watched your performance! You were – divine”

“Divine?” She stares at this grotesque youth, who, even at the age of sixteen, towers over her. The beautiful face in his tiny head is glowing with adoration which she can see is utterly sincere. “You think so?”

The rain, desperate to be noticed, intensifies its attack.

“Fraulein believe me! I have seen so many fine sopranos – all over Europe! And none so – so coloratura, so perfect in vibrato, so elegant in bel canto!”

Ah you charming liar. You haven’t spoken even one moment of truth since you stepped into the rain. You are taking a huge gamble, dear man. For a start, does this German provincial know the first thing about bel canto, vibrato, coloratura? And she hasn’t said a word to you since first you met…

    “Bel canto!”

“You pronounce Italian so well. I could tell from your singing! You speak Italiano?”

“Oh signor! A little – enough for opera – “

“Never enough Italiano! I speak only a little German – “

    “You speak so well!”

Dear liar, brought up in Germany, you speak it as well as any native! Stop putting on that accent!

“You are very kind… Perhaps we can find some shelter?”

Having gained each-other’s permission, the pair find the overhang of a medieval building to lurk under together. All around them the summer storm whooshes.

“Do you think you could teach me Italian signor?” Gertrude asks breathlessly.

“I would be so honoured and delighted!” Guido is overacting sickeningly at this point. He is speaking German with an absurdly exaggerated Italian accent. Seriously, while he is the greatest singer who ever lived (perhaps) as an actor, he’s rubbish.

Gertrude laughs. I hope she is not as stupid as he thinks she is. “And in return, I will teach you German!”

“It would make me very happy.” Guido says.

“I could even help you with this!” she says, grasping the tent pole which is attempting an escape through the young man’s trousers.

“Really?’ Guido asks as he unbuttons his flies.

Candidate Victoria and her glorious banner at Brentford Market

The local elections are over. I had one of the lowest votes in history in Cranford (though it was three figures…) which I have to admit surprised me a little. Admittedly, as instructed I didn’t canvass. We candidates in non-tarot wards were told rather to expend our efforts in the Target Wards, so I did that. I spent my free time manning the phone bank at GP HQ, doing surveys in Camden, Brixton, Richmond. I did door knocking in Richmond too, and am delighted Andree Frieze won a council seat. So I did my bit.

I was disappointed with my result, to be honest. After all Cranford is right under the flight path and will suffer horribly from pollution, traffic, noise when and if the third runway goes ahead. But it is staunchly Labour, and the voters voted the way they’d always voted.

In Hounslow there was no Green candidate elected  in any ward despite a huge increase in the total number of votes. In my opinion the local Greens fought really well, staunchly manning (and womanning) Brentford Market every Sunday, leafletting relentlessly and putting a massive amount of heart into the struggle. Wonderful people. I love them all. The increase in the total vote was well-deserved.

    But no councillors.

The question asked of us was, should we have really fielded 57 candidates? That is about three per ward. Here is my response, sent to our Agent.

“…… I really think we need to have no more than one Green candidate in each ward, as I said – so that our vote is not diluted. Having said that, the total number of votes compared to last time is superb and a real endorsement of our policies – but we must remember there are some specific issues playing themselves out. Dissatisfaction with Corbyn as a result of his wishy-washiness on Brexit gained us and the Libdems quite a few crosses. It certainly played well on the doorstep, as did resistance to the Heathrow Third Runway.

“Our Unique Selling Point is not just that we are champions of the Environment; we have what the others have so little of: integrity. We need to shout that out.
“Now, in the run up to the next elections (I doubt if a General Election is too far away) we need members, as Tony said, preferably active members; and big fat rich donors. I met many potential members and super-rich donors on the doorsteps of Richmond. Then we need to spend the money recruiting members, spreading our message, embedding ourselves as the party of the future, and overcoming the general perception of GP activists as sandal-wearing bearded idealists. Even though many of our best people are! A friend asked me, “are there any GP members who are in the real world?” By which he meant, any who are in business? My annoyed response was, “We certainly all are!” By which I meant, unlike the captains of industry, the bankers, the CEOs of the huge PLCs, the shareholders in the carbon-producing energy companies and the drivers of cars powered by diesel, or with engines larger than 2 litres, we KNOW the terrible threat our children are facing. We know that unless tackling Climate-Change is central to government policy, irrespective of the vested interests, our way-of life and security is going to suffer terribly. Now THAT’S the Real World. And that is why I joined the Green Party.
“Yes, it’s important to resist Brexit. And to base all our policies on compassion and the best values of liberal humanism, with economic realism. But damn it, without good air, water, housing and food, we are doomed to go the way of the dinosaurs.”
I did, however, win a great victory for the planet and the Party last week. With the aid of the wonderful HR person, I lobbied, hassled and bothered the school canteen to abolish single-use plastics. They were buying and throwing away 8,000 items of plastic cutlery a week. Polystyrene cups. As of Monday, no more of these plastic items. The canteen is going almost plastic free. Full marks to Innovations and Featherstone High School. Today Southall. Tomorrow….
We need to own campaigns like the war against plastics. Long before David Attenborough showed us the real horror of the impact of our carelessness, the Green Party and Greenpeace were featuring the problem. Now the bloody Daily Mail has jumped on the bandwagon! Ok who cares who owns it as long as something is done. But if it was ours, we would certainly have had more votes.
