  • An Act of god. Or God.

An Act of god. Or God.

The day the ceiling fell in and I didn’t

God nearly killed me yesterday. It was, I must admit, a bit of a shock. I am – or seem to be – alive, which is fortunate because it gives me another chance to choose between Upper and lower case. God or god.

I was standing in my kitchen chatting casually with V in the next room. The discussion had something to do with sugars in tea, I assume, since the kettle had just started boiling. And then a grinding crash from above my head, and a large chunk of ceiling fell at my feet.

I didn’t react immediately. Earlier I had been cleaning those heavy chunks of shelving from the ‘fridge, which for some reason had become spattered and sloshed in blood, or rather blueberry juice from a prematurely defrosted bag. The fridge looked as if a recently guillotined head had been tossed into it, maybe to keep it out of sight of a close relative, for reasons I may one day turn into an amusing short story. So it did need a clean.

So when this great grinding smash of a crash happened, I assumed a glass shelf had hit the floor. Forgetting that all the shelves had been gingerly returned to their rightful place at least ten minutes before. A rather stupid conclusion, bearing in mind the fact that the crashing sound had been accompanied by extremely loud Eastern European versions of ‘oh FUCK!’

Then I realised there was a hole in the ceiling, and most of the hole was deposited at my feet. Four anxious Eastern European eyes bulged through the gap above my head, attached vaguely to cartoon-style faces, each absurdly like Desperate Dan from the Dandy, drawn on stubble included.

I looked up. I looked down. I computed. I concluded. ‘You!’ I yelled, with all the power my drama-trained teacher-voice could muster, ‘come down here! Right away!’

The contractors working for the flat upstairs are a ragged bunch. For some crazy reason my upstairs neighbour has employed the same batch of incompetent clowns to deal with her water damage as had failed to fix the roof, charged for it, and refused to come back and fix it when gallons of moisture entered all the flats in this Edwardian house. Along with the statutory mould, damp and misery. We had to hire proper roofers to do the job. And now here the roof-buggerers were, ‘repairing’ the damp in the flat above me.

So here they stand sheepishly, in my kitchen, East European Desperate Dan and Co, staring up, down, up, down and attempting to draw some conclusions. ‘I sorry,’ DD number 1 said, ‘I drop and fall through floor.’

‘You nearly killed me!’ My teacher voice bellowed. ‘You see? I was standing right here!’

Incomprehension. Further apologies. Promises to fix.

So now, I’m faced with the dilemma: God or god?

Background: V has recently had terrible life traumas. Finding me dead and bloody on my kitchen floor is not on his menu of life-enhancing experiences.

Mind you, it’s certainly not on my list of life-enhancing experiences either.

I’m thinking about all the millions of people who, after terrible life-threatening events, say ‘God (or the Gods) saved me’, or ‘prayer saved me’. Also I’m thinking about the millions who went into death or horrible injuries with prayers on their lips. As the plane plunged to the ground. Or the Tsunami approached. Or Cancer eroded their (or their loved one’s) lives.

Death or horrible injury didn’t happen to me, this time. Thank God. Or god.

As you probably know, I have often said this: ‘God’ is a very convenient metaphor for the hugely complex interactions of action/reaction since the beginning (or invention???) of Time. Before the 4 billion years of Earth, before the invention of Time, there was infinity. After the invention of time there is infinity. During time, there is infinity. So time is a convenient invention, as is ‘God’ to explain the whole shebang, when it’s all just Newton’s Third Law. Or Karma, as the East says. So it is quite correct to say ‘God made us’, and many of the banal sayings in the religious books, taking ‘God’ as a metaphor, are therefore correct. What makes me chortle is when the metaphor is taken too far and ‘God’ is anthropomorphised – given thoughts, a voice, intention, and even a human face. A being, who listens to prayers. And then that engenders a great deal of delightful fiction which is used to terrify people and screw money out of them.

How tempting to say ‘God saved me’ – and V!

BUT. If the analysis above is right (and I have no idea if it is- but it’s as good a theory as the anthropomorphised ‘God’) `- I prefer to use the lower case g to refer to the substance behind the metaphor.

Which is right? I reserve my judgement until either a great voice, a thunderbolt, or a telegram emerges from the Great Unknown and says, ‘Jon! You’re an asshole!’

    I love you all.

Note to ‘God’ just in case: Listen here daddy, I’ve always been nice and good and helpful and if there is ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ and I’m denied one or the other just because I didn’t join the right brand, just pop me in ‘hell’. I’d hate to be in a ‘heaven’ which only admitted one brand.

  • NEW POEMS

    NEW POEMS

Funny, funny ha ha, funny peculiar, deadly serious, ultimate introspection, infection, selection and defecation. And yes, some detestable doggerel too.

Since the publication of my collection Some Day Soon, my pen made these. Another collection is evolving, as am I

    The Med is blue

This poem was written on my journey to Greece, where the yacht Flying awaited me in the harbour of Astypaleia. A plague ship! P had just informed me that a member of crew had Covid, and the other two were self-isolating. It starts, as so many epic journeys do, on the Tube….

    Sunday. On the tube.

    And here the invisible dust

    Blows through our bodies

    Ground metals pulverised glass

    Interspersed with viruses

    Alive and dead

    Being and becoming

    The Karmic parade passes, passes

    Eroding

    (The Med is blue)

This Piccadilly line takes me from

    Present to present along these

    Karmic tracks

    Eroding steel

    Train to Gatwick :

    Southward from Victoria

    Trains and planes and boats

These boots are made for walking

    (How to heal

    A broken heart)

(What are we searching Google for?

    Basic Greek Phrases)

    NASA about to launch

    Going to the moon

    Pointed up

    I’m pointed south

    Wizzair

To my shame I took a ‘plane. I know! I can make excuses, I can give explanations, I can lie to myself and to you. Shame! I took a ‘plane!

    The cloud-bothered Achaean sky

    Between Olympus and heaven

    And below

Giant feet have scored the Earth

    Crinkled like insults mountains sulk

    Folding secrets

    A long wide river dried

    Deterred from its function

The Med is blue, I’m told

But now whiteness hides Greece from me

    We descend

    This wine-dark sea

    On a ferry from Piraeus

    Only at night.

Here the dawn makes the sea rippled black

    The fresh foam chases us

    Skipping islands

About which all that can be said

    Has been said

    Thousands of years been said.

    Except:

    They’ve never had me before

In a plastic chair on a deck

Skimming my words lightly around them

The apogee of my karma this far.

    They’ve never had beloved friends

    Peter, Zelda, Maggie and Anna

    waiting for me

    At Astypaleia

    Confined in their plague ship

    Locked up with positive.

    Never before. Ever.

The ferry Naxos grinds out and thrashes

    Sea beneath my stern

    (Mine and the ship’s)

    Like years.

(My mother’s picture features on my iPad.

    I didn’t select it.

An algorithm devised by others’ eyes

Put her there to protect me.

Hello Valerie! We were on a ferry – when?

    Perhaps in Seattle, I remember!

    To Whidby island, that’s right!

    I took pictures then too.

    I looked through the pictures.

    Perhaps you weren’t there.

    Except in an image

    On my iPad)

THERE WILL BE MORE in my second volume of poems, THE WINE DARK SEA to be published in December 2023.

    MEANWHILE a miscellany of ephemera…..

    I reflect you

A shade as empty as a sliver

An echo of a silent sigh

A whisper of a breeze unblown

    A disorder of spirit

let me see the ravaged face

    You quietly hide

    The shreds of your eyes

    Lips bared back from teeth

    Ground into sharp posts

    Blood-flecked

We squeeze into this space so hard

    Condensed into mere memory

    Viced into tiny

     Simulacra by

    The delusion of a journey.

I murder myself words sharp as swords

    Seppuku

    If I could but

    Swallow myself whole

    I would

My mind to me a kingdom is

Edited in Prisma app with Daryl Feril

    Betwixt the Earth and sky

    Wherein the subtle difference lives

    Between the you and I

And all I own, and all I give

And all that seeks me out

    Makes of me a mystery

    I cannot learn about.

Where light and dark are blended quite

Night made of lightness, dark made of light

Look closely into my eyes, beloved,

    ….

British politics continue to bug me. How on earth could Boris Johnson and his coterie of Bullingdon bullies and Eton messses stay so long in power? Since I wrote the poem below, he has resigned. Hurray. To be replaced by a billionaire bureaucrat.

    Bugger off Boris

    You cad!

    Crawl back in your hole

    We rumbled your artifice

Seen the emptiness in your soul

We watched as you shamed us

    On the international stage

But when you shut your door and partied

    RAGE!

    Your bum hit the buffers

You were kicked out of Ten

    And believe me Boris

WE NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN

More Tube Poems. Well, what else is there to do on the London Underground than depict, in words….

    I don’t know what I’m doing

    Or why

This train tunnels eastward under London. It knows where and why, or rather, the speck of human who faces the silver disappearing lines of track ahead knows. His name is Mohsin and he is picking his nose.

Why am I on this journey with you Mo?

Oh Mo I have nowhere to go

    Or why

Beneath me earth, obove more earth

    And above that, sky

I never tell you anything. you say

Or rather you don’t. We never speak anyway

    We never tunnel underground

    So

It’s with Mo I got to go

    She wears the agony

Of oysters on her wrist and around her neck

    Her sharpened nails blood red

    And mouth painted sanguine

    Smile full of tombstones

    Creature of blood and death

    Captive here in #ink

    Some feast on life

And sleek and fat they take their fill

And then take more, and more until

    We starve.

As for me, I prefer to #munch my due

    And proceed down the path,

    Singing

Here’s some for me and some for you

    (Or Rather, I should!

But I ain’t made of……. You finish the rhyme!)

    (If only I could!)

  • FACE OFF 2

    FACE OFF 2

The excellent Facebook Group Philosophy, Poetry and Art frequently posts challenging, intriguing quotes from well- known writers, artists and philosophers. And what fun! Comments roll in from both sides of our polarised society and I love reading them and engaging with people I don’t necessarily agree with.

Here are my responses to some of the comments from people who took umbrage and saw fit to disagree with Sayers

    Why is she right?

    1. THE TIMELINE

18th Century: Industrial Revolution – huge production possible for the first time.

Someone has to buy it – millions employed both manufacturing and in distribution (read Adam Smith)

Late 18th/19th Century: Growth of free market economics and untrammelled capitalism

Late 19th Century – becomes a science mid 20th Century: Invention of marketing to fuel demand

Post 2WW: Increased manufacturing and distribution

(Massive increases in pollution of air and water)

    (Massive increases in carbon emissions)

1960’s 70’s 80’s; Increased wealth and production fuelled by increased marketing and increased availability of consumer finance = more marketing = billions spent on promoting and consuming goods people don’t need at prices they cannot afford

    Addiction to ‘Growth’

Huge increases in fossil fuel, plastics etc

= huge increases in pollution and emissions

    = Climate Change

….Sayers said it more succinctly. Admirably. As only a novelist and poet can.

As to me? Years of teaching both Economics and Marketing!

    1. THE ECONOMICS

To AP’s comment that ‘poets’ have nothing useful to say (knowing nothing about Sayers, freely admitting she has never read her. oh you right wingnuts! Your ‘trickle down’ turns out to be utter nonsense. Doesn’t happen! It takes a CEO of a top FTSE 100 company 4 hours to earn as much as the average wage – and do you think anyone benefits but offshore banks, yachts and finance houses? The only ‘trickle down’ from rich to poor is urine. 😰🤣Your ‘free market’ turns out to be impossible, it causes consumers to be ripped off and is a major contributor to Climate Change. Your addiction to profit, growth, the giant casinos of the stock market, the focus on rewarding shareholders above all stakeholders delivers shoddy goods at inflated prices, and infuriated consumers who don’t have enough money to heat and eat.

‘Conservative Economics’ delivers misery, poverty and soon, utter fury.

We will not be ruled by the 1%. If you’re content to lie down in front of their Bentleys, cool. But be sure they’ll ride right over you and have a flunkey pick your teeth out of their rubber diamond-encrusted tyres.

RP: ‘Monetarism saved us in the crash of 2007’ And threw us into the inflationary spiral as presented by Keynes!

George Osborne’s addiction to controlling the money supply (Chancellor 2010-2016) resulted in Austerity,, massive cuts in public services, which caused a vast chasm to open between the rich and the poor. The rich got MUCH richer and the poor went and go in increasing numbers – to food banks. The current industrial unrest in Britain can trace its root cause to Austerity, as nurses, doctors teachers and practically everyone else (except the rich) watched the true value of their remuneration erode with inflation. What the monetarists got wrong was not including fiscal measures in their ideological ‘solutions’. Income and wealth must be fairly distributed, best through taxation. This is not ‘Socialism’ it’s pragmatism. The Tories cut taxes for the rich when we were in a dire financial position. I assure you (tackling the Tory trope) the rich would not ‘flee the Country’ if they were still charged 45% on top salaries rather than the 40% Osborne cut it to. Many of the rich are crying out to be taxed more! The problem with economists of the Left and the Right is that they are Left and Right. Polar opposites who hate each other irrationally. The answer lies between. Sensible fiscal measures, sensible monetary measures, well-ordered public spending backed by prudent borrowing. So time to depolarise and start a conversation rather than an argument. Can you, say, do that or are you a polar bear? 😉

    1. THE ROLE OF MARKETING AND THE NEW ECONOMICS

‘People have a choice when they buy consumer goods’: Bro! I taught marketing. Every trick in the book to prise money out of people to pay for goods they don’t need at prices they can’t afford. I deeply regret that now, with the sad conclusion that Climate Change is largely caused by overproduction and overconsumption. Ultra Capitalism and free-market economics has screwed the world and will impact hugely on our children and their children. The answer is not Socialism either, but a new economics based on needs, regulation based on environmental concerns and sustainable products. The Circular Economy is an excellent ideal to work towards. Look it up. We must think local, not global when sourcing goods and services. We must abandon the ‘Greed is Good’ Gecko philosophy. Companies need to put customers, employees and suppliers above shareholders and mere profit. This is ethical business. The profit will follow! Most people prefer to deal with an ethical business than a grubby, cheating, unreliable cynical business that does its best to screw them. Top executives, currently vastly overpaid must be appropriately taxed and forced to pay fair wages and to stop exploiting their staff. Unless we have a massive step-change, frankly, to use that rather comic phrase,  – we’re doomed.

The consequence of free-market deregulated economics is Climate Change.

The consequences of holding on to the old ways of rampant consumerism are horrible for the next generation.

We need a new Green Economics, neither Capitalist nor Socialist.

    Sayers would heartily agree.

Here is a brief selection of poetry (and doggerel) that has delighted me this week. Please attempt not to be offended. Blame the original writers whose works have influenced our Poet Laureates

On reading Betjeman’s ‘Views of the Town Clerk’  by JOHN BAKER

Let’s turn our thoughts to Brentford first

Of tedious towns among the worst

The clearing work is nearly done

    Historic buildings have all gone….

We should have trees, the Greens will cry

So plant with Ash! it soon will die…

Help Putin fund his squalid war

    Approve gas guzzling  Ballymore…..

A statue is needed in the square

Steven Curran surely should be there….

Entice the stinking cads from Slough

    Brentford suits them better now…

The Grime of the Ancient Mariner by TONY FIRKINS

Edited in Prisma app with Leya

    Water, water, every where,

    And all the boards did shrink;

    Water, water, every where,

    Nor any drop to drink.

The very deep did rot: O Christ!

    That ever this should be!

Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs

    Upon the slimy water quality.

About, about, in reel and rout

    The death-fires danced at night;

The water, like a witch’s oils,

Burnt green, and blue and white.

And some in dreams assurèd were

    Of the Spirit that plagued us so;

    The River Brent followed us

From the land of mist and snow.

    ….and here’s one from me!

    SUV by Jon Elkon

Edited in Prisma app with Leya

What a joy is is to see

A silly prick in an SUV!

    With a flick of mastery

He’s looking down at you and me

    Such pretentious rickery!

What a joy it is to see

A dummy mummy in an SUV

Soooo much room for baby Gee

Looking down at you and me

    It’s a world-defying mystery!

Oh men and women who greenly strive

To keep our precious specie alive

While dummy mummies and pricks agree

That looking down from their SUV

    And lording it so definitively

Makes them better than you and me!

  • Letter to America 67b

    Letter to America 67b

    To my New York Cousin

    Dear Cuz

I haven’t forgotten you though I’m considering forgetting everything else.

How are you? In this biodegrading world? At least you lot have had a respite from the collapse of western civilisation. I wish you a deep ‘phew!’ Don’t ‘phew too loud, someone might hear. Even Mudrock! Who lives only a few blocks from you in Manhattan. If he were to hear any ‘liberal’ sighs of relief he would dump Trump, call him Humpty Trumpy and put all his evil machinations to the service of De Santis.

Too late! He has! MNM> (for the elderly amongst us that stands for Make No Mistake and is not to be confused with MSM, which is what the Rabid Right call an illusory monster which seems determined to unveil all their dirty secrets. They’re terrified of it.) De Santis is a real threat to democracy and the world. While Trump is merely a deluded narcissistic clown with too many penises, Ron is One Big Dick. And remember how critical the Name Game is. ‘Trump’ means, something or someone determined to beat everyone to prove his superiority. Whereas De Santis means Of the Saints. Shiver in thy boots oh world! A creature who thinks he is beloved of ‘God’. Who thinks he is capable of miracles! Whose mission is to ‘save mankind’.

We, on the other hand, are juggling with Prime Minsters. There seems to be a factory producing defective humans specially designed for this purpose. What monsters they make! The Truss was the funniest: made out of  spare parts left by Maggie Thatcher, operated by a defective clockwork mechanism, with a teddy- bear voice box programmed with only three words, all of them ‘growth’

The latest one is rather diminutive and has aspects  of Ken, you know, Barbie’s boyfriend. In an attempt to persuade the public that this one is indeed human, he has been fitted with the CPU of an Amstrad computer of the early 80’s, programmed by Hayek, after he died.

Meanwhile the Extinction Event continues to ramp up. World leaders leave their massive carbon footprint all over Sharm el Sheik, jet trails from their private jets smothering the sky. And the hysterical voices of the Rabid Right continue their rants worldwide as their plans for world domination wax and wane, wax and wane.

I’m off to wax Wayne! Have a lovely birthday!

    DOGGEREL OF THE WEEK

    Cons in a muddle

    Playing the silly blame game

    One thing’s for sure

    There’s only one cure

    Shout!

    Out Tories! Out! Out! OUT!

  • By the time you read this we’ll know if America has left us…

By the time you read this we’ll know if America has left us…

    …and become, once again, THEM!

By ‘America’ I mean the USA. Much of the rest of the Americas teeter between Us and Them. Brazil, which has been Them for a long time, may in a fragile way, have made its first attempt to become part of Us. Canada, up there  in the top half of the North, still clings to its its Usness, like a faded battered lighthouse continually washed by the thudding of tsunamis rolling in from  its south.

But oh dear, USA! That once Horn of Plenty has turned into the box in which Schrodinger’s cat may be alive or dead.

Once, we basked in Americana. Zoot suits. Levi’s, Coca Cola, porn, Allan Ginsberg, Marvel Comics, Kennedy and Obama. All built on the glorious principles of freedom of speech, the excellent values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The theory being allow every plant to grow and weeds will have nowhere  to go.

The weeds have always been there. With roots in the religious zealots who fled Europe in the 17th Century and after, with their bigotry and allegiance to ancient mores – as well as belief in  truth and ‘freedom’ within the constraints of their antique Book. Such a mixed blessing. Flowers, and weeds.

It may be inevitable that one day the weeds will win. In 2016 a particularly poisonous weed, Donald Trump, did indeed win the Presidency despite having won a minority of the votes of the people. The absurd Electoral College system, whereby states, whatever their populations, each have an equal vote ensured his victory. Thank goodness Trump turned out to be so noxious and incompetent, the next election saw an extreme senior, so senior that his outlines are becoming blurred, a sweetheart with a great heart and a deeply ingrained love of liberal democracy, into the Presidency. At least he is one of Us. It was a case of Anybody But Trump.

And in the new world of the Senior senior, the weeds grew and grew.

Like the Weimar Republic post WWI, the baddies had been defeated but the seeds of the weeds planted by Keiser Trump with his Big Lie spread everywhere. They flourished in the Supreme Court, planted by the Liar-in chief. They snuck into many of the offices of the land, with bags of lies and sweeties for the kids.

It is the Right  Wing Narcissist’s playbook to always accuse the Opposition  of exactly what ails himself. They use the word ‘groomer’, to imply that all Democrats are pedophiles and only they can save ‘America’ from moral destruction.

Yet they are the groomers. I am not saying  they are pedophiles – a pedo can be of any political persuasion, and I’m sure their politics are of no consequence. What is of consequence is their preying on children, which is ghastly. And so, anyone accused of being a ‘groomer’ is seen as dark disgusting and dangerous.

Well, the Rabid Right is dark, disgusting and dangerous. Like weeds they  spread their poison wherever they can get it  in. They are certainly in schools, in every town council, in the Senate and Congress. They are attempting to groom the Nation. Not sexually: they are grooming the Nation to believe that only Fascism can save them from pedophiles, trans people, gays and a shadowy cabal they call the Deep State.

Behind them the lunatics of QAnon, the false Christian Evangelicals, the Rabid Right – racists, xenophobes, homophobes, Transphobes, Nazis, fascists, Bad People…and the innocents whose capacity for logic has been shut down by brilliant sophistry and twisting of the truth. Every  phobe in  the book. A panoply of Hatred.

Democracy cannot flourish when choked by weeds.

    America, have you left us?

    2. Why cook? Salads make a great meal. With the right dressing, add protein eg tofu, cheese, prawns, yum! No cooking needed. Easy washing-up!
    3. Why heat? Jumper up! When the sun is shining, curtains open to let light in, then closed whenever sunbeams are not pouring in. Turn heating on low for half an hour early morning and evening to take the chill off.
    4. Coffee and tea: cut down by half and save all the gas and electricity needed for caffeine intake! Or, if suffering withdrawal, Cafe Nero is comfortable and warm and no-one bothers you if you buy the odd caffeinator. And bring a laptop, even a dead one. They bother you less.
    5. Exercise vigorously when it’s cold if you can. Keeps you warm and keeps the Putin from the door.
    6. Get invited to dinner with richer friends lots. Bring a salad and they’ll invite you again.
    7. Do sex! Alone or with a friend. It’s warming, and great exercise.
    8. Go out lots. Libraries, public buildings, shops are all (over) heated. Lurk in department stores, wishing you had a slingshot for all those rich people actually buying things.
    9. Here’s an obvious one: turn off all those stupid standby red lights on tv, etc. that’s about £60 pa saved. Why the hell do they still design stuff with standby lights? What are they standing by for? World War 3? Not long to wait now…
    10. Bath and shower: if you haven’t invited that delicious neighbour over for some warming sex, why are you bathing/showering every day? Ok, if you’re smelly and don’t want to be shunned by strangers, maybe the odd ablution is a good idea. But not every day! However often you ablute, cut it down by two thirds. Halve the bath. Shorten the shower.
    11. Shaving: a battery shaver is nothing like as good or efficient as a wet shave but so what? Just buy one and zizz your face (if you must) most days. Saves lots! And if you are going to a warming dinner with those rich friends, wet shave with half the warm water you once used. It works! Why did we ever fill the basin?
    12. Tech eats money. Radio, tv, computer, internet, iPad, mobile. Cut by half! It’s not just turning them on that delights the profit-mad utilities, it’s all that charging of batteries you have to do.
    13. Clothes: wear, re-wear and wear again! You’ll be amazed at how often you can wear clothes without them smelling of rot. I change socks and underwear daily because I’m well brought up. But jeans go for days. Then, obviously do not use the washing machine until it is well full. No hotter than 30 degrees, add an extra pod of washing liquid if they’re super smelly. And ffs don’t use the tumble dryer!!! There are brilliant indoor drying racks available and washing-lines for those lucky enough to have gardens. Think of how impressed the delicious neighbour will be when he/she sees all those designer labels draped all over the flat.
    14. Did you need to turn that light on? Most people have a habit of turning a light on when entering a room. Even in the daytime when there’s more than enough light to see where the toilet is. What a waste! The bathroom light usually has a fan attached. Did you fart? Exhale steam? Pee on the floor? Was that light(and fan) really necessary? The same for all other rooms natch.

    The Queen Died

    About Time?

    How to feel?

    Granny is dead.

    Mother has gone.

The massed legions of the dead

    Will welcome with warm

    Cheers

    Marm.

    Bereft of her smile

Of the wave of her gloved hand

We line for mile after mile.

    But the coffin is empty.

    Our hearts are full.

I was surprised to feel no more than a twinge when I heard Lizzie was dead. She was a pocketful of privilege after all. A tiny recipient of vast formal and informal adulation, always beaming, wouldn’t you. The tradition of deferring to those who by accident of birth have inherited titles and land is deeply engrained – not just in the Brits, but worldwide. I am infuriated by the expectation that I should address some titled twit as ‘my lord.’ Nobody is my lord, nobody but myself.

And ‘sir’. When I became a teacher I was uncomfortable whenever addressed as sir. And as a karate instructor, the word ‘Sensei’ is a responsibility I have to bear. Often an onerous one. But listen here, chaps. I earned those titles. I wasn’t born to them.

A friend Iaian was recently awarded a Lordship- this chap had trained up to black belt in Karate with me, became General Secretary of the Labour Party, so I guess he earned some kind of recognition. But he can eff off if he thinks I will ever address him as my lord.

But I guess the twinge I experienced had nothing to do with Lillibeth as queen. But having lost my mother recently, in her nineties, I realise that Mrs Queen was also a widow, a mother, a grandmother. And I discovered those words ‘had a good life’ etc are empty. The loss remains a loss, whatever age someone dies at. So while I am somewhat amused, somewhat sickened, somewhat bored and somewhat impressed by the panoply of adoring ritual and pomp accompanying this corpse to its grave, I wish all those bereft a long life and some comfort.

    Rest in peace
